Problem

Many craft beer bars change out what's on tap every week. Some beer lovers are always in search of new tastes and flavors but take a risk going to a Brewery and not knowing what's on tap. Also, those who are new to Craft Brew Beer have a hard time finding information on beers they might like.

Research/ Discovery

Statistics of audience

My first step to finding my audience was to gather information about who my target audience was. What Generation drinks Craft Brew Beer. Information from Statista about Craft Brew Beer drinkers was where I decided to start.

Findings

With the information found on https://www.statista.com/, I concluded that this app is best aimed at Millennials, and those aged between 21 and 35. This range of people is statistically more likely to search for craft brew beer.

This information allowed me to know the type of people I wanted to interview to validate my solution for informing people about craft brew beer.

Interviews

For research, I interviewed a mixed group of people. About 4 people I interviewed knew a lot about craft brew beer so that created one group of people. The rest of the 3 people I interviewed had mixed feelings about beer. After asking what feature they would want in a beer app this is what I discovered.  In the end, 71% of users wanted to know the story of the beer, and where to find it. The other 29% talked about how they would like a visibly appealing representation of the beer.

Personas

The personas were created to reflect the data collected, and represent both spectrums. One comprises those who are big fans of craft brewed beer and another that is interested in getting into craft-brewed beer.

Competitive Analysis

Of the three apps that I've looked at, UNTAPPD is the only app that is up to date and still has support updates. The others weren't worth mentioning since they were stuck on iOS 5. Untappd is a social media beer app very similar to what I plan to create. With an active community that posts about their favorite beer, and updates that share what's on tap at local craft beer bars. This app seems well put together. Listed below are what I think are the pros and cons of the app. Also, I listed what I wanted to improve.

Take aways

  • The Beer needs to be updated frequently
  • There is a lot of room to educate the user about beer
  • The apps are missing s sense of personality that might turn people away

Audience

In order to make sure that I design this app for both beer lovers and those new to beer, I did my own research on which groups of people drink Craft Beer. After my research, I found out who my main audience would be, and created personas based on those types of people.

Problem Validation and Solution

Solution

After looking up statistics, interviewing potential audiences, and doing some competitive analysis. I found that there are a lot of people looking to learn more about craft brew beer. I want to make an app to help newcomers and veterans of beer. This platform would be about connecting beer establishments with their audience and uncovering the hard-to-find beers. The new brew will also have some personality by selling merchandise that would help grow the community of beer lovers.

Ideation/Concepts

Designs

After doing the research, I’ve come up with design goals that will help my application Stand out. Create better UI by using bigger text, graphics, and appealing photos of the products. Focus on finding the beers on tap, and the educational part of the app. Use more of the screen for the types of beer and information from reviews. Implement a rewards system for users to win physical items. Keep scannable QR codes at bars to gain points that equate to physical prizes.

Wireframes

I wanted the aesthetics of the app to be visually pleasing and fun to interact with. In order to do that, I designed around putting real photos of the beer on the menu and having them look as good as they taste.

Digital Wireframes

After drawing out a couple of wireframes I decided to recreate the ones I liked the most on Sketch. What I found was that I heavily focused on showing the visuals of the beer I forgot to test out how I was going to create the layout for the list of beers. So I started to create more layouts that had more text init in-order to provide the information I want the user to see.

Home Screens

The home screen shows the featured beers of the week. Each of the beers is shown poured into a glass, and displayed in an appetizing way. Since the glasses are shown right up front, the user is able to scroll through each of the beers and find out where it is being sold, and also the story behind it.

Profile Screens

The profile screen is designed to make sure the user can keep track of their saved beers and locations. This screen also displays the points they have saved up after using the QR scanner available at partnered bars. The best way to reward the users was to dress them up in a style that represents their favorite type of brew.

Dictionary Screens

For these screens, I wanted the background of each category to reflect the colors you would see within the beers. I wanted them to look appetizing and easy to find. I used a simple dropdown chevron function to open information when it’s needed and not all at once in order to keep things minimal and clean.

Map Screens

The search function is set up in a way that is comfortable and familiar to the user. All they really need to do is search for the desired location, and the app will find it. Once the user finds a location, information about the types of brews on the menu will be available to view, along with the price and taste.
